Italy may have exited the World Cup at the group stage but there will be an Italian presence in the final in the shape of referee Nicola Rizzoli.

Rizzoli will referee Sunday's World Cup final between Argentina and Germany, FIFA confirmed on Friday.

Rizzoli, 42, had been seen as an outside bet to handle the showpiece game at the Maracana Stadium, with FIFA expected to choose an official from a neutral regional confederation.

Rizzoli's previous assignments include the 2013 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley.
