The Erasmus student was attacked, allegedly by two homeless Romanian men, in Santissima Trinità square while walking home after dinner with friends in the early hours of June 8th, La Repubblica reported.

One of the men has been arrested while the other is said to have fled Italy.

The student was attacked after having dinner at a restaurant on Milan's via Tito Speri, the newspaper reported.

After saying goodbye to her friends, she was reportedly approached by the men and followed to Santissima Trinità square.  They allegedly hit her over the head before dragging her into a nearby garden and raping her. They then fled with her purse and mobile phone.

Tests proved that the student, who is now back home in Poland, was "beaten and raped", the newspaper said.

Police were able to trace the alleged attackers through DNA on the girl as well as CCTV images.
