A blood-thirsty wolf in central Sweden went on a killing spree leaving seven animals dead, while a further 13 had to put down as a result of injuries sustained in the attack.

An additional six other lambs were also hurt in the attack and their fate remains unknown. A local surveyor has placed the blame on the shoulders of a wolf in the area.

"I'm making that assesment based on how the lambs were attacked. It was a violent back bite and throat bite," Urban Mossberg told the Nya Wermlands-Tidningen newspaper.

Local media reported that the wolf managed to breach the protected paddock and attack the lambs. Farmer Jonas Torstensson said he intends to seek compensation from the local government.

"It was unpleasant to see the suffering of the animals," said Torstensson, who discovered his lambs scattered throughout his enclosed pasture.

Urban Mossberg of the local authority said the scale of the attack was unusual.

"It doesn't happen very often. Usually it is far fewer animals that die," he said.

In March The Local reported that Sweden's wolf population was on the rise with an estimated 400 prowling the country.
