Not so many years ago when it came to Nordic noir, the household names of Jan Guillou, Stieg Larsson, Liza Marklund, Håkan Nesser, and others had one thing in common: they were all Swedes.
But over the past few years neighbours Norway and Denmark have had their own Nordic noir breakthroughs, led by bestselling Norwegian author Jo Nesbø and Denmark's Jussi Adler-Olsen. The latter's highly-praised crime series based on the flawed detective Carl Mørck and his special investigation unit Department Q, led to international success for Adler-Olsen, 64.
The first instalment of the series, The Keeper of Lost Causes (Danish title: Kvinden i buret) hit the big screens last year in a big way. With over 720,000 Danes buying tickets to the film, it was 2013's domestic box office winner. In October, the second book in Adler-Olsen's series, The Absent One (Danish title: Fasandræberne), will be released, once again starring the critically-acclaimed Nikolaj Lie Kaas, 41, in the role as Mørck. Danish instructor Mikkel Nørgaard will once again be behind the cameras.
Two more films in the instalment have already been scheduled by producers Zentropa Entertainment and TV2 Danmark.
