US man plunges to death hiking near Zermatt

Cantonal police earlier reported the man as missing on Saturday.

Emergency rescue officials found the victim’s body a day later in the Täschalp area.

From the initial evidence, its appears the man fell while he was walking along a mountain trail.

Officials launched a major search for the missing man on Saturday, when an Air Zermatt helicopter and a Super Puma helicopter from the Swiss Army flew over the region.

The army helicopter was equipped with an infrared camera, police said.

An investigation into the accident is continuing.
