The first 40C heatwave to hit Italy this summer will arrive just days into July, sweeping across the south of the country.

From today until Sunday temperatures in the Sicilian capital Palermo will hit 36C, slightly lower than the 37C forecast for Sardinia’s biggest city Cagliari.

In Sassari, northern Sardinia temperatures will rise to 39C, while the 40C peak of the heatwave will be felt in the centre of the island, L’Unione Sarda reported.

The north of Italy is due to stay at around 30C, similar to temperatures forecast further south in Rome.

Across Europe, Scandinavians were readying for their own version of summer. As The Local reported earlier this week, temperatures in the Swedish capital Stockholm are forecast to jump to 25C over the weekend.
