The 30-year-old from Poland was stopped near Manschnow in Brandenburg by the Polish border on Friday, customs in Frankfurt (Oder) said on Monday.

The 110,000 cigarettes, which would have been subject to a tax of €21,000, were placed “throughout” the car, which had Berlin number plates, customs said.

The majority were in the trunk of the vehicle, which a customs spokesman described as a “normal-sized” car.

The cigarettes were hidden in hold-all travel bags.

Officials in Augsburg, Bavaria, also said on Monday they found 30,600 cigarettes in a Bulgarian truck on June 17th on the A8 motorway.

Two men, aged 51 and 29, are being investigated for tax evasion.

The amount avoided in tax would have been €4,600.
