The Social Democrats were coordinating their position for the EU summit at the end of this week. They also spoke in favour of shifting the emphasis in Europe from savings to growth.
Representing the Social Democrats, French President Francois Hollande and German Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said that in return for support for Conservative Juncker, they wanted other top positions in Europe for their own grouping.
Juncker is favoured by some states, but opposed by the British and the Dutch. A report in the Mail on Sunday quoted a senior diplomatic source as saying ‘Juncker and his boozing is the worst-kept secret in Brussels. He is politically and personally unsuited to run the EU.’
