Barcelona’s Mossos police force revealed on Tuesday that the arrests had taken place late last month at a night spot in the upmarket Sants-Gervasi neighbourhood of the city.
Four Romanians and two Spaniards aged between 24 and 29 were accused of fraud plus the uncovering and disclosure of confidential information.
Those arrested are said to include five prostitutes plus the owner of the brothel where they worked.
The investigation began on May 13th when a client reported to the police that he had paid for sex using his credit card but that when he woke up he discovered that four payments of €1,300 had been made without his knowledge.
Another victim described a ‘gap in his memory’ from the time he arrived at the brothel until the following afternoon when he found himself in the street, with €19,350 in charges and cash withdrawals made on his personal and work credit cards.
No chemical evidence of ‘date rape’ drugs was found because the type that police suspect was used leaves no lasting traces, according to Catalan daily El Periodico.
But police did discover photographs of one of the unconscious victims dressed as a woman. It is thought that the prostitutes took the photos to coerce or blackmail the man into not reporting the thefts.
Mossos officers believe that there may be more victims who have not yet come forward.
The technique used by some prostitutes of drugging their clients in order to steal from them is known as El Beso del Sueño (the Dream Kiss) after the 1992 Spanish film of the same name in which it was prominently featured.
