Fire chiefs rescue boy from washing machine

Emergency services in southern Sweden used baby oil to rescue a 10-year-old boy from inside a washing machine after he'd managed to get stuck in it.

The incident occurred in Västervik after the boy had attempted to crawl inside the drum of the machine. After getting his leg stuck and unable to free himself the alarm was quickly raised.

A full-strength fire brigade were quickly on the scene and worked to release the boy. The rescue operation took approximately 30 minutes and the boy was not injured.

"It is of course something that you will never forget," firefighter Peter Hallberg told the Västerviks-Tidningen newspaper.

He added that the fire crew used baby oil in order to free the boy's leg from the machine and that he remained calm throughout.

Referring to mischief maker Emil of Lönneberga in the famous Astrid Lindgren books, Hallberg said it was a minor incident.

"It's good that he wasn't injured in any way. It was simply a bit of Emil mischief," he said.
