Minecraft maker buys Sweden’s priciest flat

Sweden's most expensive penthouse has just been sold to Markus "Notch" Persson, better known as the man behind Minecraft.

The man who made Minecraft may be famous for creating virtual property – but that didn't stop him from buying a posh real one on Sunday with his very-real dough.

Minecraft Markus, 35, is now the proud owner of a rooftop residence in ritzy Östermalm. The Stockholm district is known for its price tags and pomp, and the apartment is no exception. The residence is complete with built-in speakers, walk-in closets in every room, a wine cellar, and an open-air jacuzzi to (literally) top it off.

The apartment cost about 200,000 kronor ($30,000) per square metre. That's a new record both for Stockholm and Sweden, according to the Dagens Industri newspaper.

But Persson's pockets are far from empty. The world success Minecraft gave him 700 million kronor ($105 million) last year alone, and funded the creation of Persson's Södermalm game studio, Mojang.

Minecraft has sold some 50 million copies around the world since its creation in 2009, and hasn't slowed down. Last year a Stockholm school even made the game mandatory learning.
