Six years jail for Swedish child porn kingpin

A 62-year-old man in Gothenburg has been sentenced to six years in prison for sharing millions of child abuse pictures online in what has been described as Sweden's biggest ever child porn ring bust.

The man, who had confessed to the child pornography offences last December, had sought to have his sentence reduced.

However, his request was thrown out at the court of appeal and the child porn mastermind will now spend six years behind bars. In court the judge ruled that new evidence merited an increase of the man's punishment.

The man is believed to have set up a child porn network called Sexnordic. Amongst the material shared on the network were films of infants and young children being raped whilst being bound.

During a search of the 62-year-old's residence in December, eleven terabytes of images and movies were found on his computer.

He admitted to the earlier offences but claimed that new material found on his computer in a January bust was uploaded by somebody else remotely.

The court didn't believe the man's story and he was convicted in early April to serve a prison sentence.

"My client thinks the sentence is far too long, and he thinks it's wrong to be convicted of a second charge, as he believes that his computer was hacked," the man's lawyer Leif Almquist told the TT news agency after his appeal was announced.

At the time of the man's arrest, prosecutor Stefan Lind told the Göteborgs-Posten daily that the seizure was "by far" the largest they'd ever done.

Before the court of appeals hearing in May it emerged that police had found a new stash of child pornography hidden under the man's cooker.

The investigation began in Germany just over a year ago and several people within the network have already been convicted of similar offences.
