Faymann ‘irresponsible’ says Vice-chancellor

Finance Minister and Vice-chancellor Michael Spindelegger of the conservative People's Party (ÖVP) has criticised Chancellor Werner Faymann of the Social Democrats (SPÖ) over possible tax cuts.

In the Monday edition of the newspaper Kleine Zeitung, Spindelegger said that Faymann was being "dishonest and irresponsible".

Faymann recently agreed to a consolidation budget where there was "no mention" of tax cuts, said Spindelegger. Deciding to become a "great fighter" after losing the EU elections (the SPÖ came in second after the ÖVP) was dishonest, he said.

Spindelegger reminded Faymann that he should "not only play SP leader" but also reflect on his role as chancellor.

The finance minister said that tax cuts could still be arranged this year. But in accordance with party lines, he continued to dismiss the idea of using wealth tax to finance the cuts. Structural reforms were more important, said the ÖVP leader. These would include funding cuts, raising the pension age, and administrative reforms.
