The movie and TV series streaming service will launch in Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Luxembourg.

There have long been rumours that Netflix would expand further into Europe and in a statement on Wednesday it confirmed a “significant” expansion, but did not give an exact date for the launches in each country.

Up until now, fans of Netflix series such as House of Cards and Arrested Development have had to find other ways to watch the shows in Germany.

Netflix said it would start with a “low” monthly price and added it would give details about pricing at a later date.

Foreign shows in Germany are often dubbed rather than subtitled, and Ian Maude from the media consultancy Enders Analysis told the BBC he would be curious to see how Netflix opted to translate its shows for the German audience.
