CANNABIS

Swedish girl, 12, found high at school

Police were called in when a young Swedish schoolgirl was acting strangely at her southern Sweden high school. Tests showed that she had cannabis in her blood system.

"This is the reality we live in," police officer Bengt Jeppsson told the BLT Sydöstran newspaper. "There aren't many people that age who have taken drugs, but now we have a confirmed case."

The incident occurred last week at a school in Karlshamn, southern Sweden. Teachers noticed that the 12-year-old girl was acting oddly and called the police. Tests revealed she had taken drugs. As the girl is so young, her case was handed over by local police to social services.

Jeppsson confirmed that police had dropped the investigation and refused to comment further on the matter.

"We are aware that this exists among the youths and we've known for quite a long time," he explained.

"We're trying to identify and find these cases, take tests and give our findings over to the social services so that they can take adequate measures," he said.

"The earlier we can identify the problem the better. Then the youngsters won't have the chance to get too deep into substance abuse."
