Löw reveals German World Cup squad

UPDATE: Germany’s football coach Joachim Löw revealed his provisional 30-man squad on Thursday for the World Cup in Brazil which starts next month.

Hopes are high in Germany that its crop of talented youngsters could become the first German team to win the tournament since 1990.

And Löw announced the squad in Frankfurt am Main on Thursday lunchtime.

Goalkeeper René Adler and striker Mario Gomez were the main stars to not make the cut.

Gomez has been injured for months, but Sami Khedira and Miroslav Klose, who have also had long-term injuries, were included.

Löw said he would have liked to have included Gomez but had fears over his fitness. “He’s been injured for seven months, only played 280 minutes. I’m of the opinion he would not have been in physical shape to play at the tournament," he said.

The coach has plumped for a fairly youthful squad with 10 players who were not even born the last time Germany won the World Cup.

Two such youngsters making the squad were attacking midfielder Leon Goretzka of Schalke 04 and Hoffenheim forward Kevin Volland.

As expected runaway German champions Bayern Munich provide the greatest number of players with seven, closely followed by Borussia Dortmund, second in the league and supplying five.

One notable returnee is Real Madrid defensive midfielder Sami Khedira, who is back following an injury.

Löw will unveil his final squad of 23 on June 2nd.
