The huge surpluses in health insurance funds mean one in three people can expect a cut in their health contributions from 2015.
The information came to light after a question was submitted to the government by the far left party Die Linke, the Rheinische Post reported on Wednesday.
Employees currently pay 7.3 percent of their income in health insurance plus an additional 0.9 percent. This 0.9 percent could now be scrapped.
“The ministry of health predicts that around 20 million people are insured with health insurance firms which could get by in 2015 without the additional contribution of 0.9 percent,” the answer said.
The figures showed that of Germany’s 133 health insurers, 67 had financial reserves totalling more than 150 percent of their monthly outgoings.
