Diren Dede, 17, died last Sunday when he was shot in a garage in Montana.
Hundreds of people gathered outside a mosque and around the student’s coffin in the Altona area of Hamburg on Sunday for a service. His body will be flown to his family’s home town in Turkey on Monday.
In a park next to the mosque stood a banner with a picture of Diren alongside a German and a Turkish flag.
The teenager was shot in Missoula by a homeowner whose garage he was in. The homeowner, Markus Kaarma, 29, has been arrested and charged with murder. He reportedly fired four shots at Diren.
According to his lawyer, Kaarma, who has been released on bail, believed someone was trying to break into his home, but Diren’s father disputed that his son would burgle anyone.
