Spring on ice

 

Swedes have endured sub-zero temperatures at night stretching from the north down to parts of southern Sweden in the past two days. Stockholmers were even pummeled by a mini snowstorm on Thursday morning. 

 

Further north, ice-cold winds are afoot, but even in the south odd seasonal records are being broken. Kalmar recorded the lowest May temperature since 1965 at -4C, while Vänersborg residents experienced -3.7C – the coldest May weather in 115 years.

 

 

"This is a real step back for spring," Sofia Söderberg, meteorologist at the SMHI weather agency, told the TT news agency.

 

And the temperatures will remain low across the country for the next five days, she added.

 

"It's really only along the east coast and in Skåne that will have typical temperatures for this time of year."
