A 21-year-old man was sentenced to jail on Wednesday for his involvement in an assault in Malmö when an immigrant man was nearly thrown off a bridge, all while the victim's 18-month-old son looked on.

The man was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to two years in prison.

The attack took place in September when an immigrant man was attacked in the suburbs of Malmö while out with his toddler child. The 32-year-old victim was held up against the railings of an overpass and even dangled above the road below. The gang members threatened to kill the 18-month-old child during the attack.

The victim said that the gang members called him a "bloody nigger" during the attack.

Police described the incident as a race-related hate crime at the time. The prosecutor, however, said it couldn't be proven that the victim's race was the motive for the attack, and did not press any race-hate charges.

While initial reports said the attackers hurled racial slurs during the attack, prosecutors added it was impossible to determine who exactly was behind them.

Witnesses were able to confirm for police that the convicted man was on the scene, though he has maintained his innocence, claiming he was at his family's home at the time of the assault.
