"The moment it becomes difficult to stand up for human rights, you throw away your principles and instead kow-tow towards China," Geir Lippestad, who now chairs the left-wing think tank Agenda, told Norway's VG Newspaper.
"My attitude is that it is a capitulation to China not to meet a human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner when he comes to Norway."
The Dalai Lama, the exiled spiritual leader of the Tibetan people, is in Norway on 7 and 8 May to celebrate the 25th anniversary his Nobel Peace Prize award.
However, Norway's government on Friday confirmed that no member of the government would meet him during his trip for fear of upsetting the delicate diplomacy over repairing the country's relationship with China.
