The earthquake hit in southern Slovenia, around 40km east of the Italian city of Trieste, according to data published by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

There were no immediate reports of injuries, with local journalist Beniamino Pagliaro tweeting that “everything is ok, in any case, for the moment”.

Other users of the social media site in Trieste said the earthquake was “brief, but intense” and “horrible for a few moments!”, while some tweeted about panic and fear in the north-east.

Earlier this month a 5.19-magnitude earthquake which hit France was felt across the border in north-west Italy, sparking panic among some residents.
