Ex-minister jailed over F1 race track scandal

Ex-finance minister of Rhineland-Palatinate Ingolf Deubel appeared in court in Koblenz on Wednesday, where the judge found him guilty of 14 counts of embezzlement in connection to the Nürburgring.

The track needed €330 million in 2009 to remain open. When bosses failed to find this from private investors, the state ended up footing the bill. State prosecutors accused Deubel of embezzling several hundred thousand euros as well as putting €12 million of taxpayers' money at risk.

Prosecutors were pushing for a four-year prison sentence.

Deubel has claimed innocence since the trial began in October 2012. His defence were calling for him to be let off.
