Puppies lost in ‘black market’ chihuahua raid

Thieves escaped from a flat in Malmö on Monday with jewellery, electronics, and four chihuahua-papillon puppies. Police worry the dogs will be sold on the black market, a growing trend in Sweden.

The robbery occurred on Monday night in Kroksbäck, Malmö, after thieves broke in via the apartment's second-storey balcony. They took a litter of seven-week old puppies, adding jewellery and electronics to their haul.

One of the dogs was found later in a stairwell.

"We're very keen to see these puppies returned and we're counting on tips from the public," Marie Persson of the Skåne police told the TT news agency.

"If anyone witnessed the break-in or if they get an offer to buy one of the dogs, then we want to hear from them."

Selling puppies has become a lucrative trade in Sweden, with smugglers bringing dogs in their dozens across the border from the south. Often, customs find the puppies in poor health after enduring cruel conditions during transit.

A quick search on buy-sell site Blocket.se revealed that the puppies sell for between 5,000 and 8,000 kronor ($760 to 1,200).

A shortage of chihuahua breeders in Sweden has seen smugglers pounce on the opportunity to import the breed from abroad, one expert told The Local
