The man, from the canton of Solothurn, was with a group of three mountaineering skiers descending on Saturday from the Gletscherjoch, a mountain 3,766 metres high, cantonal police said on Sunday.

At an altitude of 3,450 metres a “snow bridge” gave way beneath the skis of the victim, who tumbled 25 metres to his death, police said in a statement.

Fog in the region prevented a helicopter rescue on Saturday, according to the statement.

Rescue workers from Bletten-Belalp and Conches were able to retrieve the man’s body on Sunday morning in collaboration with Air Zermatt, police said.
