The three French nationals had gone snowshoeing near the village of Rabat-les-Trois-Seigneurs when the avalanche struck on a 300-metre (1,000-feet) stretch.

One of them, a 27-year-old, managed to extricate himself and alert rescue services despite serious injuries.

The dead are a 25-year-old woman from the southwestern city of Toulouse and a 32-year-old man, also from the region.
