The week was marked by intermittent strikes by public servants demanding pay increases.

Large demonstrations took place in Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Dortmund and Frankfurt.

Far-left activists also held a demonstration to oppose "state repression" in Berlin over the weekend, setting fire to cars and clashing with police.

Chancellor Angela Merkel was busy over the week, attending a nuclear security summit in The Hague before heading back to Berlin to hold talks with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Tuesday was a day of jubilation in Munich after Bayern defeated Hertha Berlin, clinching the German league title. Celebrations began on the field and continued all night as players celebrated at a Berlin nightclub.
