UEFA bans Basel fans from Europa game

Swiss football club FC Basel must play their Europa League quarterfinal first leg clash against Valencia behind closed doors after being punished for the violent behaviour of their fans.

UEFA also fined FC Basel 107,000 euros ($147,500) after objects, including cigarette lighters, were thrown on to the pitch in their last-16 clash against Salzburg last week with the referee halting the game for ten minutes.

A second one-match stadium ban was suspended for two years, UEFA said.

Basel and Valencia meet on April 3rd.

Meanwhile, Basel fans were celebrating their team's 1-0 victory against FC Lucerne on Wednesday night in the Swiss Cup semifinal.

The win sets up a cup final between Basel and FC Zurich for the first time since 1973.
