Gammel Dansk becomes Gammel Norsk

The Norwegian giant plans to shift production of both the complex herbal spirit and the popular Aalborg Aquavit to its plant on Gjelleråsen, outside Oslo. 

 

“We need to grow these traditional brands,” Arcus head Otto Drakenberg told Denmark's DR channel. “Our mission is to increase consumer awareness of some of Denmark's most famous products.”

 

The company plans to turn most of the waterfront Aalborg distillery into office and living space, leaving a small section as a micro distillery where it can carry out R&D into new brands. 

 

Despite the name, which translate as "Old Danish", the drink was invented as recently as 1964, nearly 30 years after Jägermeister, nearly 120 years after Fernet Branca and Underberg was invented in Italy and Germany respectively.
