ISLAND

This will probably be one for history buffs more than the price conscious, but a Napoleonic fort is up for sale in Italy, and right in the heart of one of the most romantic cities in Europe.

The fortress guards over a private island in the Venetian lagoon that became part of Italy in 1866.

Some years later, the island was bought by private owners, who carefully restored the fort into a sprawling four-bedroom villa while maintaining its original features.

Marketed by Vladi Private Islands, the island has its own sheltered harbour and mooring facilities, from where you can sail to the centre of Venice within minutes should you crave some hustle and bustle.

The property also comes with three bathrooms, what the agency calls a “functioning” kitchen, and a caretaker’s apartment.

You can also visit other islands that make up the Venetian archipelago, including Sant'Erasmo, Burano, Mazzorbo and Torcello

Worth an estimated €12m, the cost of seclusion amid carefully-manicured gardens doesn't come cheap, but if you're in the area, it might be worth a snoop around.
