The 45-year-old was subsequently arrested and taken to hospital. He is reported to be in a stable condition with gunshot wounds to the hip and thigh.

"He has a pelvic injury and a leg injury in the thigh, according to information I have been given by doctors," said police spokesman Marcus Grahn.

The man had barricaded himself inside the house at the isolated farm around midday on Friday. Police arrived at the scene to find the man armed and subsequently began a dialogue which lasted several hours.

"At 6.30pm, the suspected man came out and threatened police officers at the location with a firearm," said Marcus Grahn.

The police then fired two shots at the man's legs, and then he fell to the ground.

The man was detained and taken to hospital in Sollefteå.

"It was a routine matter," said Börje Öhman at Västernorrland police.
