Norway picks Swedish artist for terror memorial

The Norwegian jury announced this week that it had selected the Swedish artist Jonas Dahlberg to design two memorials to honour the victims. Behring Breivik killed a total of 77 people in a two-pronged attack that left another 319 injured.

The first memorial – entitled 'Memory Wound' — will be excavated on the peninsular of Sørbråten, which juts out into the Tyrifjorden lake. It faces the island of Utøya where Behring Breivik went on a murder spree of teens and young adults attending the annual Labour Party youth camp.

Dahlberg proposed cutting a one-thousand cubic meter slice through the rock that sits at he end of the peninsular, leaving a scar on the landscape that will serve as a permanent memorial to the 69 people who died on the island.

The rubble will then be collected and transported to the site of the bomb that Behring Breivik detonated in central Oslo on the same day. The excavated stone will first be put together as a walkway, then later on shaped into an amphitheatre entitled "Time and Movement".

In a statement on Thursday, the jury that had sifted through competition entries for the memorials said in a statement that the Swede's designs were "radical and courageous".

"The jury perceives Dahl's proposal for Sørbråten as artistically very original and interesting," it said. "It is able to communicate and confront the trauma and loss that occurred after 22 July in a bold way."

"This is my biggest and arguably most important mission ever," Dahlberg said after winning the commission.
