The Akademiska sjukhuset hospital in Uppsala declared the boy had died on Monday morning after he succumbed to extensive internal injuries. The boy had been found at lunchtime on Friday in the municipality of Kramfors, when a woman heard him screaming in a carpark and immediately rushed him to hospital.
"He was not completely unconscious when he was found, but was in a very bad way so it was difficult to get a clear picture of what had happened," Robert S. Öhman of the Västernorrland police told the TT news agency at the time.
Police suspect that he was hit by a car, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. They added that the driver may not be aware of the accident. The nine-year-old was wearing dark clothes at the time, which may have contributed to a driver not seeing him in the carpark.
Police have classified the incident as suspected manslaughter.
