The special forces operation targeted a “dangerous association of Nigerians” with “mafia characteristics”, in Rome and elsewhere in Italy, police said in a statement.
Members of the group allegedly trafficked women from Togo in west Africa to Italy, where they were forced into prostitution.
The gang face a catalogue of charges, including mafia association, forcing people into slavery, drug trafficking and money laundering.
Italy’s special operations (ROS) and Rome police collaborated with Togo authorities to trace the route used to traffic young women.
