La Côte newspaper reported online on Tuesday that Wawrinka, who last month won the Australian Open tournament, has applied to build a villa with a swimming pool and pool house in the town, 14 kilometres east of Geneva.

The tennis player, now ranked third best in the world, officially lives in Saint Barthélemy, a village northeast of Lausanne, where he was born.

But La Côte said he has been living in Coppet with his wife and daughter in Coppet for two years.

And residents recently erected a banner with the words “Bravo Stan” in the town.

The planned villa is set for land near the new Perrières neighbourbood, east of the town centre, La Côte said.

The newspaper said the new home was in keeping with the “discretion that characterizes him”, a modest structure on 1,225 square metres of property that would not rival the mansions on Lake Geneva.

With a population of just under 3,100, Coppet is famous for its chateau, which was once home to the writer Madame de Stael (1766-1817) and that of her father Jacques Necker, banker and finance director for France’s King Louis XVI.
