Competitors alleged Deutsche Bahn has prevented them from selling tickets at train stations. The Federal Cartel Office announced that it wanted to know why this was and would be looking into the operator's practices.

“Effective competition in ticket sales is essential for competition on the tracks,” president of the Cartel Office Andreas Mundt said in a statement.

The investigation was prompted by complaints from competitors, who claimed that they have very limited ways in which they could sell tickets.

"Competitors have complained that they have limited access at best to the Deutsche Bahn's distribution channels," Mundt added.

Deutsche Bahn competitors also claim it charges them an unfair amount of commission for ticket distribution
