His wife, a 24-year-old Swiss woman, was treated in hospital for serious injuries from cuts and stab wounds to the neck after being attacked on Monday, police said.

The attack followed an argument between the couple, who were only married a year ago.

Police released a photo of the suspect with the cooperation of local public transport authorities on Tuesday.

“That gives us the possibility of simply reaching more people than with a simple news release or a message on the radio,” a spokesman for the police force told the SDA news agency on Thursday.

The prosecutor’s office gave their approval for the communication strategy.

So far, there has been no information on the whereabouts of the suspect, who is identified as an ethnic Albanian.

Police said he is about 170 centimetres tall, with a short-cut beard and protruding ears.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a plaid shirt and a black jacket with a white emblem on the chest.

Police fear the suspect may have returned to his native Kosovo.

He had only arrived in Switzerland a few weeks ago.

The local prosecutor’s office said it has opened an investigation for attempted intentional homicide.

Earlier this week a 35-year-old Macedonian woman died after being shot in Wohlen, a town of about 14,000 people, under circumstances that remain unclear.

The husband of the woman, who died in a Zurich hospital, was detained by Aargau cantonal police for questioning.
