The police told local newspaper Öresunds-Posten (ÖP) that a passer-by had found the man, whose body was frozen in a stream and whose identity has yet to be confirmed. The police said that the victim was likely in his twenties.
Police in central Sweden's Åre, one of the country's most popular winter sports destinations, said they believed the man had died either during the night or early on Monday morning.
"We've found identification in the man's clothes. All I can say now is that the man comes from southern Sweden," Jämtland County police spokesman Per Thelin told ÖP.
Police at first treated the find as a possible crime, in part to ensure they had a full compliment of investigative resources at their disposal.
But by Monday evening, forensic investigators deployed to the scene ruled out foul play.
"It was an accident," Thelin later told the TT news agency.
