CHURCH

Parish giving away church for free

A municipality is offering to give away one of Norway's most northerly churches, after deciding that they can no longer justify paying for its upkeep.

The church on Ingøya, an island just off the Arctic Sea coast in Norway's far-Northern Finnmark county, will be passed over free to anyone who commits to maintaining it.

"The council and the church don’t have the funds to be able to care for the church," Arne Nygaard, head of the nearby Måsøy parish, told Vårt Land newspaper.

"The parish council has therefore decided that they want to 'give away' the church to a foundation, or a Christian denomination, that is able to take better care of the building.”

The church, which was built out of brick in 1957 after earlier church was burned to the ground by the Germans, needs an estimated 1.4m kroner ($230,000) spent on renovating it.
