Car-bomb mum convicted for trying to kill her kids

A central Sweden court on Monday found a woman guilty of trying to kill her own children in an attempted car explosion, after she claimed they "should go with her" into death. Her violent past included shooting and killing her parents as a teen.

The Örebro District Court found the 40-year-old guilty of attempted murder and sentenced her to psychiatric care. The National Board of Forensic Medicine (Rättsmedicinalverket) said that the woman was suffering from a severe mental disorder when she tried to kill herself along with her two children earlier this year.

The incident took place in September just outside Örebro. In court, it was revealed that the woman opened a liquefied petroleum gas cylinder in the car, which sparked an explosion when the gas was ignited inside the vehicle.

Both children, who are of elementary-school age, suffered light burn injuries to their faces as did the mother. The verdict stated that it was purely a matter of luck that neither the fire nor the explosion proved fatal.

The mother had previously written a letter expressing her desire to die along with her children, stating that they "should go with her".

In an earlier court hearing, the woman admitted that her intention was to kill her children. She agreed to undergo a mental health review, which concluded that the woman ran a high risk of relapse.

It was her second violent brush with the law. When she was 14, she shot and killed her parents but as she was underage, she was not sentenced for the killing.

Swedish social services are currently caring for her children.

LANDSLIDE

Swedish authorities: Worker negligence behind motorway landslide

Swedish authorities said on Thursday that worker negligence at a construction site was believed to be behind a landslide that tore apart a motorway in western Sweden in September.

The landslide, which struck the E6 highway in Stenungsund, 50 kilometres north of Sweden’s second-largest city Gothenburg, ripped up a petrol station car park, overturned lorries and caved in the roof of a fast food restaurant.

Prosecutor Daniel Veivo Pettersson said on Thursday he believed “human factors” were behind the landslide as “no natural cause” had been found during the investigation.

He told a press conference the landslide had been triggered by a nearby construction site where too much excavated material had been piled up, putting excessive strain on the ground below.

“At this stage, we consider it negligent, in this case grossly negligent, to have placed so much excavated material on the site,” Pettersson said.

Pettersson added that three people were suspected of among other things gross negligence and causing bodily harm, adding that the investigation was still ongoing.

The worst-hit area covered around 100 metres by 150 metres, but the landslide affected an area of around 700 metres by 200 metres in total, according to emergency services.

Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries after the collapse, according to authorities.
