Powerful winds stripped the roof off the Vikhammer centre in Malvik, a suburb of Trondheim during the night. Luckily the supermarket was deserted at the time, so no one was hurt.
Norway's Meteorological Institute categorised the storm as "extreme weather" on Thursday evening, giving it the name "Ivar".
The storm was violent, but short-lived, passing over the coastal region in less than three hours.
"It was very intense for a few hours. The storm came as quickly as it went," said Ole Bjørn Harang from the police in Sunnmøre told VG newspaper.
Norwegian state rail company NSB cancelled all trains to the northern city of Trondheim on Thursday evening, leaving many stranded, while more than 50,000 households left without power.
The island of Lærvika near Ålesund was hardest hit, with winds of more than 43 metres per second recorded by Norway's Meteorological Institute.
