The officers arrived on Monday and will stay on until the end of the new year celebrations to help identify Romanian criminal networks in the French
capital.

"Wearing their own uniforms, they are taking part in patrols of public areas and supporting their French colleagues in securing the major tourist and shopping centres of the Paris area," said a statement from the city's police headquarters.

French authorities have in the past accused members of the Roma minority who have flocked to France from Romania and Bulgaria of being responsible for a rise in petty crime.

However, the police headquarters said the number of Romanians implicated by police since the start of this year had fallen by five percent.

Ten Romanian police are now based permanently in France and have helped break up 10 suspected theft rings in less than a year, it said.
