Spanish firemen found the man's body under a pile of rubble in his cave home. They believe it was the collapse of the grotto's ceiling which caused his death.

Neighbours had noticed the British pensioner had gone missing for two to three weeks and decided to contact local authorities, Spanish news agency EFE reported.

When Guadix's fire brigade arrived on the scene, they had to reinforce the dwelling with struts before they could reach the man's body.

Many of the cuevas, as they are called in Spanish, have been fully refurbished and are regularly rented out to tourists.
