MOTHER

‘I see bike lanes and I just think ‘Stoner”

US comedian Margaret Cho is touching down in Stockholm as part of her latest European ‘Mother’ tour. She tells The Local about beautiful Swedes, her love of dill and what the audience can expect from her latest show.

Billed as “an untraditional look at motherhood and how people view maternal figures and strong women in queer culture", Cho’s ‘Mother’ tour is described by the comedienne as her edgiest show to date, touching on race issues, drugs, and sexuality.

This isn’t Cho's first trip to the Swedish capital, having previously attended the Stockholm Pride event with gay American author and sex columnist Dan Savage.

There, she admits to having been surprised by the Swedish attitude towards marijuana, a topic which she plans to touch on in her upcoming show.

“I think this is really funny to talk about and I had just assumed that all European countries had the same marijuana culture as Amsterdam,” she tells The Local. “I see bike lanes and I just think ‘Stoner’, but that is not the case in Stockholm.”

Does she have any expectations this time around?

“Everyone is really beautiful, and this I had known before I came, but then it was shown to be true time and time again,” she says.

But most of all, the San Francisco native is looking forward to tucking in to a traditional Swedish meal.

“I fell in love with the food, especially the taste of dill – it’s rarer in America than people think – and it’s wonderful.

“Swedish people do actually eat Swedish fish too!” she marvels, “the candy kind and the ocean kind.”

Swedish audience members can even expect to hear jokes in their mother tongue, although she admits it may cause some pronunciation issues.

“It’s the language that I find the most foreign – it’s like Chinese to me!”

The Stockholm show is on Wednesday December 18th at Södrateatern. The show starts at 7:30pm.
