Pensioner’s ‘mummified’ body found in closet

The body of a 68-year-old woman, wrapped in bed sheets and sitting upright on a chair, has been found in the bedroom closet of a villa near Cuneo, northern Italy. The grim discovery of "The Holy woman", made on Sunday by her son-in-law, has rocked the small village of Borgo San Dalmazzo.

Graziella Giraudo was dubbed the “Holy woman” in the village of Borgo San Dalmazzo for her ability to predict the future with tarot cards, La Stampa reported.

She lived in the three-floor villa with Rosa, the mother of her son-in-law.

Rosa, who recently died of cancer, used to assist Graziella with her tarot reading sessions by welcoming customers to the house.

Graziella, who was separated from her husband and had two children, had been ‘away’ for several months, on what her family believed was a trip.

In the days leading up to Rosa’s death, dozens of people visited to the house to pay their respects without knowing that the body of Graziella, embalmed and wrapped in sheets, with her left hand resting on her knee and her right hand raised in blessing, was in the small bedroom.

The corpse was only discovered after Rosa’s funeral on Sunday. The children of both women assured police they knew nothing.

Rosa was described by La Stampa as someone who liked to “live privately”. One theory is that she concealed the death in order to continue receiving Graziella’s pension.

La Stampa reported that despite being ill, Graziella continued to read tarot cards and that Rosa was “always by her side, welcoming and attending to visitors”. Rosa reportedly told her son and daughter-in-law that Graziella had left on a trip, “but would be back”.

Police immediately seized the house and opened an investigation.
