According to Quality of Life in European Cities, a survey organised by the European Commission, 97 percent of Oslo's residents said they were "satisfied" with the city, just below the 99 percent of citizens of Aalborg in Denmark, and the 98 percent of citizens in Germany's Hamburg.

Oslo, which was not included in the last survey carried out in 2009, shares its position with Copenhagen, Groeningen and Zurich.

Johannes Hahn, the European Commissioner for Regional Policy,s said that the survey should remind national governments of "the many elements that contribute to a sense of wellbeing and a good quality of life in our urban environments".

"I hope the results will inspire and guide policymakers, urban planners and civil society to address urban problems through a more holistic and integrated manner."

More than 41,000 people across 83 cities in Europe were surveyed by the polling company TNS Global.
