A 34-year old football supporter was rushed to hospital after he got caught up in a brawl and was then accidentally run over by a police car.

The incident occurred in Örebro, central Sweden, when fans of the local club and rivals GAIS started fighting with each other. It’s estimated that up to 40 supporters were brawling and police were quickly on the scene.

In an attempt to break up the fight a police officer moved his vehicle and in the process ran over a supporter.

“How injured he is I can’t really say just now. But we did speak to him which suggests that he is not so badly hurt,” said Örebro head of communications Mats Nylén to local paper NA.se.

It’s understood that the man was lying injured on the ground after being beaten and kicked when the police ran him over

“Certainly it was a difficult situation, it was dark and 30 to 40 people were fighting with each other,” added Nylén who said he was unaware if the fight was prearranged as is often the case with football hooligans.

Police have video footage of the brawl which they hope will shed light on the incident. Nylén said that it is standard police practice to record football hooliganism in order to identify regular offenders.

“There are several videos so hopefully we can see the sequence of events which will help the prosecutor in his judgement,” Nylén said to the TT news agency.

“The prosecutor must determine whether we have done anything wrong,” he added.
