Princess Mette-Marit on sick leave till Christmas

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway has suspended all official duties until at least Christmas after a back problem sustained on a trip to Ukraine five years ago made an unwelcome return.

The Crown Princess, who been on sick leave since the start of October, originally hoped to return to work this week. But the spinal disc herniation, or slipped disc, which caused her trouble up at the start of the month does not yet appear to have eased.

"The Princess is getting good help, so now she just needs to take time to heal," Marianne Hagen, the Palace's spokesperson, told VG.

The Princess has had neck and back problems ever since tripping up and knocking her head on a cobblestoned street during a visit to the Ukraine in 2008. The accident left her with serious concussion, causing most of the trip to be cancelled.

In 2010, the Crown Princess missed the Olympics in Vancouver when the neck problem recurred.
