A Swedish man who is paralysed from the waist down woke up one morning to find his pet dog Pojken ("The Boy") had eaten his toes off, prompting doctors to amputate the man's leg below the knee.

Micke Thomasson, who lives in Sundsvall in eastern Sweden, was permanently injured following a car accident 25 years ago and now lives with his pet dog.

The car accident left the man without the use of his legs, and he developed leg ulcers and sores, one of which was so serious that doctors recommended amputation of the leg. However, Thomasson refused, telling the local Sundsvall Tidning newspaper that “it didn’t feel right” to remove a part of his body.

However one month ago Thomasson was in particular pain from the sore which had begun to rot, and he put himself to sleep using morphine. When he woke up, all of the toes from one of his feet were missing.

“A friend of mine who was staying over came into my bedroom in the morning with a cup of tea. He yelled ‘The dog has eaten up your toes!’,” Thomasson told the paper.

The toes had vanished and there was a small pool of blood where his feet had been, the paper reported. Thomasson noted that his bloody dog was frazzled after the effort.

“He worked hard during the night – when woke up he was completely exhausted,” he told the paper.

The Sundsvall resident was rushed to hospital, where his leg was amputated below the knee.

As for Pojken the dog, Thomasson harbours no ill will, and wouldn’t dream of getting rid of him.

“He’s the reason I want to live. Without him, I would have closed up the business long ago… The leg was in poor shape and needed to go, now I feel better,” he said.
