Swedish hospital introduces VIP cards

A hospital in southern Sweden is to introduce VIP cards for patients in order to relieve the pressure on emergency room staff and ensure those who are most ill are seen faster.

The cards will be available to patients using the Karlskrona hospital and have been developed with the Swedish association of local authorities and regions (Sveriges kommuner och landsting – SKL)

Patients, who go to the emergency room with mild symptoms, will be given the card which guarantees them an appointment at a local health centre within 24 hours.

The patient will first meet with a nurse in the emergency room and will be given the option of taking up the VIP card or choosing to remain waiting in the emergency room.

Developers of the card hope the scheme will free up physician time and enable those who are most ill to receive the urgent treatment they need.

The card was developed as a result of the rising number of patients who are going to the emergency room. It has already been tested in some other emergency rooms across Sweden with good results reports Swedish Radio.

Karlskrona will roll out the VIP cards on November 17th for a four-month trial in collaboration with local centres. SKL have stated that nobody will be forced to receive a VIP card.
